With a focus on sustainability, resilience, and efficiency in the processing of vegetables and fruits and the cooling and storage of food products, the brand new Fruechte Boqoui facility incorporates advanced energy systems, seamless workflows, and innovative design principles. This unique project fully reflects STM Design & Build’s commitment to excellence.
From design to turnkey delivery, STM managed every aspect of the Fruechte Boqoui project. The architectural and structural designs - developed in-house in collaboration with iDB - prioritized efficiency and compliance with food safety standards. Construction materials and systems were carefully selected for quality and sustainability, while the entire facility was built with precision and care, overcoming challenges such as its hillside location and elevated foundation. The steel construction was produced at STAWI, and STM Design & Build supplied and constructed the entire project, including all technical installations, interior finishing, and furniture.
The facility’s design was driven by its purpose: the processing, cooling, and storage of fresh produce. Features like column-free production areas, hygienic ceramic floors, waste separation rooms, and refrigerated zones were meticulously planned to optimize workflows and meet rigorous industry standards. These elements ensure the smooth handling of vegetables and fruits, while maintaining the highest levels of hygiene and efficiency.
Sustainability underpins every aspect of this project. High-quality PIR insulation materials were used throughout, with 200 mm for the roof, 120 mm for the walls, and 80 mm for the floor, ensuring energy efficiency and minimizing heat loss. The solar power system drives the CO2 cooling installation. This advanced system recycles energy to heat floors, provide hot water, and generate ice water, reducing the facility’s environmental footprint, with adaptive maintenance systems monitoring energy usage in real-time.
STM’s proven track record with the client was instrumental in earning the trust needed for such a comprehensive project. By focusing on quality and cost efficiency, STM delivered a facility that not only meets, but exceeds expectations. Safety, both in construction and in the facility’s daily operations, remained a top priority throughout.
For optimal performance, the building is equipped with CO2 cooling, a solar-powered energy management system, and efficient workflows. With an elevation of 800 millimeters above the original foundation and a 50 meter free span, the new structure offers both more space and added capacity.
Below is a detailed overview of all specifications and special features of this project.
The Fruechte Boqoui facility is finished with a focus on durability, hygiene, and efficiency. Hygienic ceramic floors ensure compliance with the highest food safety standards, while wall finishes are designed to facilitate easy maintenance and long-term, durable resilience.
The office spaces feature a modern, professional aesthetic. The 780 m² office space features hotel-quality interior finishing, creating a professional and welcoming atmosphere that combines luxury with functionality.
One of the standout features of this project is the innovative integration of an 800 millimeter raised foundation into a hillside, ensuring stability and maximizing usable space. Additionally, the 50 meter column-free span enables seamless workflows, while the solar-powered CO2 cooling system represents a leap forward in energy efficiency, recycling waste heat to power essential systems such as floor heating and hot water production.
This project incorporated advanced expertise, including 3D architectural and structural design, BIM integration modeling, prefabricated insulated construction, and free-span construction for seamless workflows.
